Microsoft Visual Studio and the .NET framework are going open-source. This is great news for Microsoft developers and anyone who uses the Microsoft ecosystem.

For developers, this means they’ll have more insight into the software they’re writing, and more access to all things Microsoft. The barrier of entry will be lower, so more developers will be attracted to writing for Windows platforms. The core software will also start to be improved more quickly, as millions of coders get a chance to look under the hood for the first time.

From a user standpoint, the Windows software environment should soon have more options, more frequent and better updates, and wider support.
