Microsoft embraces the open-source community again with their latest offering: SQL Server on Linux.

SQL Server 2016, the latest version of the database software, will run on Linux now. So many businesses have moved to Linux servers that it appears Microsoft is looking for ways to keep at least one part of the software stack as a Microsoft product, even if it can’t own the underlying operating system.

Database software is more important than ever in today’s age of content management and big data; everything from blog posts to transaction records to customer survey data can be stored in a database like SQL Server.

Expect the full release of SQL Server 2016 later this year.
